We are thrilled to announce the arrival of a rare and elusive male fossa (Cryptoprocta ferox), native to Madagascar. This exciting addition marks a significant step in our ongoing commitment to conservation, education, and the protection of endangered species.

Meet Isalo: Our New Male Fossa

The new male fossa, named Isalo, arrived safely earlier this month from Chester Zoo. He is currently settling into his specially designed habitat. His arrival is part of a carefully managed European endangered species conservation programme (EEP). This initiative aims to preserve healthy and genetically diverse populations of at-risk animals.

Fossas are often mistaken for a type of big cat or mongoose, but they are a unique species with characteristics of both. These agile, curious, and powerful animals are rarely seen in zoos. This makes Isalo's arrival an extraordinary opportunity for visitors to learn about one of the world's most fascinating, yet lesser-known, carnivores.

Why Fossas are Important

Fossas play a crucial role in the ecosystem of Madagascar. As the largest predator on the island, they help control the populations of other species. However, they face several threats, including habitat loss, fragmentation, and persecution by humans. Raising awareness about these threats is important for conservation efforts.

By welcoming Isalo, we aim to shine a light on the challenges that fossas and their habitats face. Education plays a vital role in fostering a deeper understanding of these incredible animals and the ecosystems they inhabit.

What Visitors Can Expect

Visitors will be able to see Isalo in his habitat starting June 28, 2025. Before that, he will undergo a brief acclimatization period to help him adjust to his new surroundings. During this time, our caretakers will monitor his health and well-being closely.

The introduction of Isalo to our zoo aligns with our mission to educate visitors about endangered species. We invite everyone to come and experience the beauty and strength of the fossa.

“We’re absolutely delighted to welcome this incredible animal to the zoo. Fossas are Madagascar’s top predators, but they’re also under threat due to habitat loss, fragmentation, and persecution by people. By caring for them here, we can raise awareness of their threats and support global conservation efforts.” Michael Knight, Director of Fife Zoo
